Low Tide

When the tide goes out on the west coast it leaves the sand combed into ridges and pools, and for an hour or so the whole beach looks like it has been drawn on. This is my attempt to paint that hour.

I built the surface up in clay paste and acrylic first, so the panel has real ridges you can run a finger along, then layered oil and cold wax over the top and scraped back into it with the palette knife.

Original, 50 × 50 cm on wood panel. One of a kind.
